Several years ago I mentioned in a previous article my 60 GB PS3 was dead. I mulled over my options and in the end, I chose to get my 60 GB PS3 fixed, I sold it and bought a slightly used 120 GB Slim with a 2-year warranty. I could have sold my PS3 and gotten a 360 instead, or focused my gaming on the Wii. But now two years later it appears my used PS3 Slim is acting up. The HDMI port has gone out, although not as serious as getting the YLOD, it is still an inconvenience. No amout of video resetting has fixed the issue.
Here are some of the options I have. I could just make due. I could rearrange my office and use my PS3 with its A/V connection to a little crummy 15” TV. Its going to be hard to read the text at 480i. I could sell my nice 22” gaming monitor and wait for a deal on a 24-26 TV and use Amazon credit. I’ve looked into getting another similar monitor from Newegg but they are $250; I'm better off getting a TV with this route.
There is the console replacement route. I could see if I could get the PS3 fixed, I’m sure it would run around $50. I could trade it into Gamestop for around $110 with Trade in Bonuses, I could get around $75 at Best Buy, and $130 or so at Amazon. Of course I would probably get hit with some sort of refurbishing fee. From there I would have to buy a new console, but because I have Amazon/GS credit this would cost me almost nothing out of pocket. There are some decent PS3 deals on Amazon Warehouse. But getting a newish PS3 would require me to download all my content, etc. and this could take hours. The other option is to just sell my PS3, I could probably get around $180 on eBay and probably $225 on Craiglist.
Or I could make due and wait for the Wii U to come out. The recent price announcement of $300 at a mid November launch date isn't too bad. Then, I could sell my PS3. Or I could sell the system now and get a used 360. There are a lot of options, and at decisions like these gamers have to decide what’s best for them. Most of us will take the easy route out and either get the system fixed or try to sell/trade it in someplace and buy another console.
