I'm not talking about the women in games like Dead or Alive or Soulcalibur. I mean meaningful, story driven games. What I have found with Tomb Raider is that it takes the best of Uncharted with gameplay and story and adds a darker edge to it. You really get a sense the fear that Lara Croft has in this story. Not since Red Dead Redemption have I genuinely cared for the main character of a game.
In most games the hero is usually a man: Mario, Drake or whoever, and the woman is usually in the background, needing to be rescued or they are just tagging along for the ride. Most of the time the woman is just eye candy to push the story along, the damsel in distress, never really the main character in the story. Now I know what you are thinking, they have made Tomb Raider games for almost 17 years. I know that, but those games were really not about the woman but about “assets” that she has, if you see what I'm saying. They never really fleshed out a great story to go with the game. You never really cared if they lived or died. But times have changed and there are a lot of women gamers out there that want to see strong women in lead roles of games, and I do too.
Most everyone agreed that Telltale’s The Walking Dead was game of the year and it’s main story was about Clementine and now with how well Tomb Raider has been done I am very excited for other games with the heroine as the lead. Nilin in Remember Me, Jodie Holmes in Beyond: Two Souls and Ellie in The Last of Us along with Lara Croft in Tomb Raider could make 2013 the year of the heroine.
