The N64 has had several great games. One of these was Super Mario 64, which desperately needs a remake beyond what gamers got on the DS. Just imagine how good Super Mario 64 would look and play on today’s consoles. Gamers have already received a remake of Ocarina of Time and it makes sense to port all of the AAA N64 games to the 3DS. Speaking of Mario, will gamers ever get a remake of Square’s Super Mario RPG for the SNES? An HD upgrade with co-op play and this timeless classic would sell thousands of copies. If we are are looking at the SNES, gamers deserve a remake of Link to the Past for modern consoles.
The PC was one of the greatest gaming machines in the 1990s. There are so many games that could use remakes. Warcraft II is one of them. Re-master one of the greatest strategy games ever to grace the PC. All that is needed is an HD facelift. Other PC games that should be considered for remakes are X-Wing vs. Tie Fighter since there hasn’t been a space combat sim this intuitive in years. Disney, who now owns Lucasarts, just needs to overhaul the graphics, add up to 16-30 person multiplayer and add the option to play as a Star Destroyer. Personally, I'd love to also see a Jedi Knight remake as well. Homeworld could also use a remake. Although there have been a few 3D space themed strategy games since Homeworld, none have held a candle to the original.
System Shock 2 deserves a remake as well. It’s the original sci-fi survival horror game. I imagine it may look a little like Dead Space but the RPG elements would keep players hooked. Another game by Looking Glass studios that needs a remake is Thief. Gamers may get their wish with this one, as it was recently announced we can expect a reboot of the Thief series in 2014. Somehow, there also needs to be a remake of Starsiege Tribes. Tribes was the game that pioneered squad-based FPS and massive online PC gaming. Rise of the Triad could also use a remake; bring back the revolutionary FPS game, which in my opinion may have been more revolutionary than Doom.
Disney/Lucasarts could also remake some of the classic, 90s adventures games. Monkey Island has been remade and it’s a start. Gamers want Full Throttle, Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones, and we would also like Grim Fandango. Throw in some revamped graphics and we’ll buy those games day one. There’s just nothing like them in this day and age. What about Descent? I think it’s high time this game received a much needed HD facelift. Gamers need 32-man multiplayer matches through space with large planetside battles. This just screams great game to me.
The Sony Playstation was another big system in the 1990s and has several classics that could benefit from remakes. How about all of the Final Fantasy games? Better yet how about a remake of Final Fantasy 7? I can’t imagine what the game would like and sound like. But I’m sure the fans would be lining up for weeks if they knew a remake would be coming. Metal Gear Solid could use an HD facelift. I think it would make the game a blast to play through again. I’d even take a remake of Twisted Metal 2 and/or a Castlevania Symphony of the Night.
Gamers cannot dream about remakes from the 1990s without thinking about the Saturn. There is one game that needs a re-mastering and it is Panzer Dragoon Saga, one of the greatest Saturn games. Add in some multiplayer with a HD facelift and fans will finally get what they have wanted for so long. If this is a downloadable remake more people would be able to afford the game, and more gamers could appreciate how great this game was. If we are talking about Sega remakes someone might as well remake Streets of Rage 3 for the Genesis. Fans of the series tried to remake the game but Sega pulled the plug. Streets of Rage 3 HD could be in 2D with 3D backgrounds, and have 4 player online co-op.
There you have it readers, it’s just a sampling of what needs to be remade from the 1990s. What do you guys think? What genre or console needs the most remakes? What game would look best in HD these days?
