This news comes from a combination of sources. One of the sources is Cheapassgamer.com and the other is Slickdeals. I’ll provide a summary of what people tend to think about this. For starters, I don’t think something like this will hurt GameStop, even though they probably see Amazon as competition. GameStop already sells other gift cards for in-game content for a variety of platforms. GameStop is selling Amazon Kindles these days and taking them as a trade-in so it make sense. People will still have to spend money at GameStop to get the Amazon giftcards. I am sure Amazon is giving some sort of kickback to GameStop with these gift cards.
It appears some users on both sites are already taking advantage of this deal. Several people on CAG have reported turning $100s of GameStop credit into Amazon gift cards. I guess it comes down to where you would rather spend your money. Amazon’ s used games are usually in better shape and their Warehouse deals for video games are fantastic. Their customer service rocks. I can see why people enjoy shopping at Amazon. The only downside is shoppers have to wait for their items to arrive.
What about shopping at GameStop? There is a lot of dislike about the stores from the pushy sales people to the condition of their used games etc. But gamers do get instant gratification from shopping there. Another thing to consider is GameStop might have some of the better deals for trade ins but you can only use that credit on games, consoles, or accessories for the most part. Amazon on the other hand has hundreds of thousands of things for sale and that credit can be used on pretty much anything. How soon until GameStop start selling Best Buy or iTunes gift cards? And when will gamers see the Amazon giftcards available from GameStop's online store?
