Have seen how much Earthbound costs? Amazon and eBay have the game listed for a pretty penny. eBay has a cart-only copy for $160ish. Want the box and the map? Gamers will pay anywhere from $400-$500 easy. Even the GBA version, which was a Japanese release, is $80 and you will need to get a translation. Goozex has it listed for 2400 points and there are a lot of people requesting it and only one copy is available and it is on hold. Goozex has some statistics on the game and since 2010 it’s been traded 12 times. Someone must have had a few extra copies floating around and just wanted to get rid of them.
I think the re-release of Earthbound for the Wii U VC will have an effect on Wii U sales. I am sure there are a select number of people that would buy a Wii U just to play this game. I’ve been holding out this long, but for Earthbound I may have to buy a Wii U. The only time I have played the game was in rom form about 10 years ago. It is a fun game and a very different RPG. At the moment it’s too pricey for me to buy it. But the release of the game on the Wii U and the potential 2014 release list has me more interested in the console than ever.
What will happen to the price of Earthbound games? I think it will still be a collector’s item. I think the price will come down on the physical copy of the game. I would estimate gamers will see the prices come down to $100 for the game and maybe $200 for a complete copy. Hopefully, the re-release of Earthbound will force Nintendo to work with other publishers and give gamers the chance to play other rare games of that caliber. Secret of Mana and Super Mario RPG have already hit the Virtual Console for the Wii. Those two games are must have SNES games, speaking of which, I should probably buy those before the Wii’s VC goes offline.
Here are a few ideas for games that need to come to the Wii U Virtual Console: Secret of Evermore, Earthbound Zero, Illusion of Gaia, and Soul Blazer.
Gamers will have to see what the re-release of Earthbound does to the gaming world. Maybe a few people would trade it out on Goozex finally. I still stand by my prediction that the re-release will be successful enough that gamers will see more titles like it come to the Wii U.
