Dying Light is about movement -- about parkour -- the protagonist is constantly moving and are generally racing to get supply drops during the day while avoiding crowds of zombies. Movement becomes even more crucial at night when the zombies transform into something faster and more aggressive. Night and day cycles quickly in the game. Gamers will have to jump, climb, slide, and and vault over the undead to race back to an area of safety. Regarding the missions, gamers can take multiple paths, and do things their way to reach the goals. There are also side missions, which may interfere with the main story missions.
It is almost as if the game is two games in one, something that plays like Dead Island or Dead Rising during the day cycle. Whereas night is something akin to Mirror’s Edge meets survival horror. The developers I talked to mention their biggest influence was some of the best zombie horror movies and it shows in the game.
While playing the game I got to experience getting around crowds of hungry zombie using distractions and traps to open up spaces so I could squeeze through. Nothing like climbing up a building and activating a trap to clear an area. Techland has also hinted that climbing may not always be an away to escape. Could there be a zombie that climbs at night? Based on what I experience with the undead sprinting after me and climbing over fences at night I wouldn’t be surprised. It is a serious adrenaline rush and feeling of dread at night while being pursued in Dying Light.
I encountered a few different kinds of zombies in the game with different abilities. The kind of weapon gamers use will make a difference in the game. Some weapons serve to hack limbs while others will smash the undead’s skulls. Guns are in the game but melee weapons attract less attention. There may be times where players will have to use guns. To keep it interesting, the weapons have a durability system and there has been a confirmed crafting system.
Some of the things that gamers would be excited about include the 4 player co-op. Work with your friends to escape and reach those drops and proceed through the game or use your friends and force the zombies to go after them. The zombie pvp mode is also interesting. Players will be able to drop into their friends online games of Dying Light and play as zombies.
Dying Light looks great from what I saw, the environmental effects from the run down city, to the water, to the vegetation looks fantastic. The way the zombies react and change at night is incredible to watch. Techland has hinted that your player will have abilities to help you throughout the game. It seems from what I saw it will be used to detect zombies and aid in escaping.
What else can I say? Come early 2014, I think this may be one of the games to pick up. Dying Light is coming out for PS3, 360, PC, PS4, and Xbox One. If you can, I recommend getting it on a next generation system just to enjoy everything the game has to offer.
