Hands down this generation had some of the best games in several generations. Looking back, gamers will talk about RROD, YLOD, PS+, Xbox Live, the Wii and motion controls, Kinect, and the games that made this generation. Games such as the Halo series, the Uncharted series, Dishonored, Skyrim, Mario Galaxy, Skyward Sword and the list goes on and on. But what about those non-AAA games? The overlooked gems of this generation? If gamers can look past the bad reviews, there might be something there worth playing here.

The idea of this article is to look at games from this generation that might have been passed over by critics and gamers. This could include games that might have snuck under the radar with poor sales and average reviews. If gamers are looking for their next RPG fix, here are a few suggestions. Alpha Protocol is a good example. The game features a mixture of espionage, stealth, and action if you can overlook its few flaws. Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is another RPG that was passed up by gamers due to the studio being brand new. The game is a 40+ hr RPG loaded with lots of content. Other RPG options include Folklore, one of the first RPGs to grace the PS3. Although NIER and Valkyria Chronicles sold well in Japan and were made by well known companies, they seemed to fly under the radar here and deserve a nod as well.

How about a few action games? Nothing is wrong with picking up Dante’s Inferno. A fun DMC-like/God of War-like game loosely based off literature. WET is another hidden gem. This over-the-top-action game combines gore and slow-mo. Everyone needs to play Epic’s Bulletstorm, an action game where beating enemies to a bloody pulp is rewarding and is a fantastic way to blow off a rough day at work. Spec Ops: The Line recieved good reviews but I feel as if the mainstream COD/BF crowd ignored it. This game has an interesting story that plays off the morality of the actions gamers commit in the game.

Enslaved and Majin are two other great action games that people tended to overlook. The acting and action in Enslaved is fantastic and Majin plays like something I would have found a generation ago, think ICO. Yakuza Dead Souls, who doesn't love over the top zombie killing? Some other hidden gems include Vanquish, El Shaddai, Saboteur, Blades of Time, and I am Alive. While Vanquish and Blades are fast action games, El Shaddai and I Am Alive are unique games for their art style alone. They are also fun action games. Prey is another overlooked action game on the 360. Hopefully the sequel will be released someday.

There were a lot of great FPS games this generation and some of them were average. Some of the underdogs include one of my favorites, Condemned 2. The game is creepy but it has some great elements in it. The end gets a little weird but is well worth the playthrough. Speaking of creepy, how about the FEAR games? The strangest one of all may be Fear 3, but it does have co-op and mechs. Singularity is another great game that more people need to play. Time travel meets FPS gunplay, it is a perfect match. Mirror's Edge deserves a nod here. This game is one of the most innovation FPS games to grace gamers’ consoles this generation.

This generation could also be known as the generation of reboots, sequels, HD remakes. Although X-Com received great reviews there are a few other games that didn't do so well. Wolfenstein, what gamer wouldn't want to go back through Castle Wolfenstein one more time? This game is a fun FPS that tries to be mystical. Syndicate should be considered a hidden gem and it's not really a sequel or a reboot. Its a 3rd person action game with 4 man co-op. The game had favorable reviews but it didn't sell well.

There are so many other great games this generation. I really wish gamers had more underdog or hidden gems that were racing games. Blur or Split Second are the only two I can think of. It will be interesting to see what other games come out this generation. Well readers do you have any recommendations?
