Swiss wonder Roger Federer blew away American “Frances Tiafoe” in rampant straight sets. The American was no match for the seven-time Swiss indoors champion who was seeking his 8th title in Basel.
Tiafoe was outstanding against Federer earlier in the year when he extended the play to the fifth set at the US open, however, he was overwhelmed by Federer’s master class at Basel.
Federer overcame the nineteen-year-old in a 6-1 6-3 set triumph in overwhelming fashion. Federer’s triumph was cheered on by his home crowd who were dazzled by Federer’s master class performance.
The result of the opening set saw the Swiss, 36, dismantling the American 19, however, the American mounted tougher resistance in the second set but ended up being overwhelmed by Federer 6-3.
Basel Next On Federer’s Radar
Next on Federer’s radar in the third round of the Basel Indoors is the French International, Benoit Paire. Paire had overcome Steve Johnson earlier on in the competition and is seeking a historic win over Federer in the third round.
Roger Federer’s win is a clear statement to Rafael Nadal, the Swiss have long been in the shadows as a result of injury-plagued latter part of his glorious career.
Federer now has to fight to stay fit as the Tennis season draws to its annual end, another injury will see the Champion falling short of the number one spot in the WTA rankings.
Victory on home court in Basel will see the Swiss inch closer to Nadal on global WTA rankings. Nadal had earlier pulled out of the competition.
