The Kickstarter for Defense Grid 2 started on July 10, 2012. In less than 24 hours it already has more than 1,200 backers and is over 20% of its pledge. Defense Grid is a tower defense game created by an independent game company called Hidden Path Entertainment. The player strategically places towers to prevent aliens from stealing power cores. Defense Grid: The Awakening is advertised as only having 8-10 hours of story play, but I’ve easily spent over 40 hours so far.
If you haven’t played Defense Grid before and you like tower defense, you’re really missing out. Fortunately, it’s on sale today (July 11, 2012) on Steam for only $2.49. Also, if you pledge at least $15 on Kickstarter for Defense Grid 2, you get a free copy of the original Defense Grid as part of the package.
The Defense Grid 2 Kickstarter campaign has four different tier levels. If it is 25% funded, a new expansion, Defense Grid: Containment, will be released for the original Defense Grid. At 50%, co-op multiplayer and a new engine will be added. The original Defense Grid will also be remastered with the new engine. At 75%, a level editor will be released and players can make their own levels for anyone to play. More multiplayer content will be released, as well as support for Mac and Linux. At 100%, the full sequel, Defense Grid 2, will be made. It will have new aliens, towers, level types, game modes, and more. The original Defense Grid is easily the best classic tower defense game I’ve played. By classic, I mean the ones where you just build towers and don’t control an actual character. It’s because of quality indie games like this that has made me respect independent developers.
