How to Defeat a Boss Battle in Deus Ex: Human Revolution

PDFPrintE-mail

deus-exDeus Ex: Human Revolution released last Tuesday and many of you are playing your way through the game. This is a rather hardcore game in that you’ll die many, many times; even if you’re playing on the easiest difficulty setting so that you can enjoy the story, you will die repeatedly.

You might find yourself having trouble defeating a particular boss about three-fourths of the way through the game.

Be warned: heavy spoilers

I don’t want anyone to confuse this as a strategy guide or a video walkthrough, but merely as some tips and hints as to how to take Yelena Federova out. You see, you won’t be able to use stealth to defeat her, you’re going to need some hot lead and some fast feet. Luckily though, the level provides plenty of ammo and mine templates.

The level before you reach Yelena, you will find a heavy rifle with much ammunition available. I suggest you load up. If you’ve built up your stealth augmentations or if you’ve focused your modifications to your revolver, then you might be a little out of luck, and in that case, you’ll definitely want the superior firepower of the heavy rifle. If you’re like me, you are saving the game frequently as you never know when an alarm will trigger or which guard will spot you. Hopefully, you have a save point before you meet Yelena and you can go back and get that heavy rifle.

The Yelena Federova boss battle starts off with a cutscene that progresses the story greatly. And then Yelena charges. Yes, the heavy rifle takes time to warm up, but when it does, it will fill Yelena with lead. But she won’t die easily. As she approaches you, tap B for a takedown. She’ll block it and hit you back, but at least she won’t unload a few clips from her machine pistol into you.

After Yelena blocks your takedown, she’ll run away. At this point, the computer, in the form of Eliza Cassan will start talking to you. Some of what she says is very helpful, such as, Yelena needs to run away and won’t attack again until her mine template is recharged. This will give you time to stock up on supplies from the various lockers located along the walls. They are full of guns, ammo, mine templates and a little bit of health. However, I never found any actual grenades, so the mine templates were useless to me. I stuck to the heavy rifle in that I figured it did the most amount of damage.

At this point, you might notice that the floor is covered in large pools of water. This is kind of strange, being that your surrounded by computers and power lines, but however the water got there, it’s there and you have to deal with it. One of Yelena’s attacks is to electrocute you by blasting electricity into the water. You might notice that after she attacks and you run away, you might still lose a ton of health. That’s because you’re standing in electrified water. You need to run by one of the closed exit doors, which is where the dry floor is.

In a nutshell, this is how I defeated the Yelena Federova boss battle:

  1. Light her up with a heavy rifle when she initially charges you.
  2. Perform a takedown when she reaches you.
  3. Let her runaway and then go stock up on supplies.
  4. Find the dry floor and wait for her to attack, when she does, the computer will warn you and tell you to run. That’s when you know to start looking for Yelena's next charge.
  5. When she charges, light her up, but don’t let her get to close. When she gets close, she’s going to use a mine template and electrocute the water.
  6. When she does get close, run away and find dry floor.
  7. Rinse and repeat. You might have to fill her with lead two or three times before she dies.

After you defeat Yelena, the plot really thickens, but I’ll save the story developments for you to discover on your own.

let me give you a much better tip: save during the fight

when she attacks hide behind a panel, you can see her in the radar so move to the other direction behind the panel, after a while she'll go invisile to charge, go find her, shoot her a few times and run away, at this point if you manage you do this with most of your health, create a new save file and save, and then repeat overwriting that file

if she kills you just load the latest save

I used the electro-pistol ... the one that stuns your enemies ... hit her with like 20 rounds and done ... oh and did i mention that she is stunned after every shot, so u can stand directly infront of her and shoot her 'till she drops??

The electro-pistol does sound like a better alternative. Especially if she can't move after you blast her. But 20 rounds sounds like a lot. Hopefully you have enough time to reload while she's stunned.

Eliza Cassan is the AI/hologram you speak with. The woman this guide refers to is Yelena Federova.

Thanks for the heads up. I was just going by the name of the mission. I've updated the article.

I stealthed my way through easily. Just stand on the exit pad where you can't get shocked and wait for her to come at you. When she does, wait for her to run up pretty close and cloak yourself, get out of the way of her path and unload a clip while staying on the pad - then she runs away for a while. Rinse and repeat. If she finishes running and can't see you, she seems to just idle.
