Box Office – How the Family-Friendly ‘Guardians of the Galaxy vol. 2’ beat Sequel fatigue


It has been almost 3 years since the grandiose superhero movie Guardians of Galaxy directed by James Gunn hit Box Officewhich got everyone enamored.
While fans were still very much in love with the Vol. 1, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 hit the Box Office in Northern America during the weekend, which generated a whopping $145 million taking it to a 54% lead on the Vol. 1. This is an impressive sales growth in the superhero category in Hollywood.

Apart from the Dark Knight incredible spurt over Batman Begins (222%), theGuardians vol. 2 had greater sales than other superhero movies which include the famous DC’s Sequel Batman vs. Superman with 43% lead on Man of Steel, as well as the likesof Iron Man, Avengers, and Thor.
The Guardians vol. 2 goes beyond the U.S., in SouthernKorea; it launched to $13.3 million which covers the entire revenue of vol. 1 generating only $10 million. China also lifted off the vol. 2with $48 million, which was 75% greater than the vol. 1 premiered in 2014.

According to the COE of IMAX Entertainment Greg Foster, – “Of all the superhero movies, it’s the one that casts the widest net, and most importantly, it is a crowd pleaser”.
19% of the viewers was made up of families with great love for such movies. On Saturday (traditional family movie going day), the first Vol. of Guardians generated $51.1 million, making it the eleventh best superhero movie in history.
Dave Hollis, Disney Distribution Chief: “The character Baby Groot is for sure appealing universally and among families.He said, “And Rocket is Rocket, as each of the Marvel movies come to redefine what the Marvel Cinematic Universe is, this movie has a big family component, and maybe even one of the most.”Paul Dergarabedian, Box-Office analyst of comScore said “Families were likely drawn by the Baby Groot character that was featured smartly front and center in most of the marketing for the film. Despite its PG-13 rating, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 may be among the most family-friendly of all the superhero movies, and this paid off big time with a massive Saturday performance for the film.”

ComScore reported sales of about 45% of the movie ticket for Guardians Vol. 2 to female viewers, while the first Vol. was 35%. Teenagers between 13 to 17 years of age bought 17% of the ticket for Vol. 2, while the first Vol. was 13%. Those within 18 and 24 years bought 33% of the first Vol., but increased to 38% for the Vol. 2 and moviegoers between 24 to 25 years of age jumped from 20% to 26%.The Guardians Vol.2 featured the glorious returnof Quill (Chris Pratt) who continued his fight against evil forces together with his team. While on his adventures, he finally met his father. Dave Bautista, Karen Gillan, and Zoe Saldana also returned. Johnny-come-latelies are Elizabeth Debicki, Sylvester Stallone, and Kurt Russel.
