Mother from Georgia, accused of killing her husband and four out of five of her children stood before court on Friday and gave a thumbs-up and a smile to photographers.
33-year old Isabel Martinez told Judge Michael Thorpe of Gwinnett County Magistrate, that she declines legal counsel. She faces multiple murder charges for the deaths of her husband Martin Romero (33) and her four kids, Isabela (10), Dacota (7), Dillan (4) and 2-year old Axel.
The judge reportedly told her to stop performing for the cameras as she wagged her finger at every charge he read out, shaking her head “no.”
Martinez told the judge that the people and her faith would act as her attorney. However, she was advised by the judge to allow the court to appoint her a lawyer. Eventually Robert Greenwald was appointed her case.
Martinez has yet to enter a plea.
The sole survivor of the stabbing rampage, 9-year old Diana, remains hospitalized and is expected to remain there for the next few weeks. However, police tell the press that she’s “awake and talking.”
Gwinnett County police were called in at 4:45 am. When they arrived at the defendant’s dwelling, they found five dead and “Fortunately, they found one additional child who was still alive suffering from serious conditions,” said police.
Martinez was immediately arrested and a spokeswoman from the police department informed press that she was cooperating however motive was still unclear.
“What prompts a person to take the life of such innocent children and her spouse is something we may never understand,” officials said in the statement.
“This is a horrendous crime not only for the victims but for the extended family, neighborhood and community.”
Diana has undergone surgery and will be expected to remain at the hospital for at least three weeks. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up for the family’s funeral costs and Diana’s medical bills.
Relatives decline to comment.
