Ajax has announced that midfielder Abdelhak Nouri has been diagnosed with serious and permanent damage to his brain during their game against Werder Bremen on Saturday.
Abdelhak Nouri was attended on the pitch as the game was abandoned and was airlifted to a hospital in Austria where he was stabilized.
However, even though his heart rate was stabilised, the club have confirmed that the doctors could not confirm his status until he was brought out of a self-induced coma.
Brain Damage Confirmed
Doctors have now confirmed that he has suffered brain damage after carrying out a CT Scan and neurological tests showed that he had brain abnormalities and the club has now confirmed the worse.
“The club is extremely saddened by the fact that Appie Nouri has been diagnosed with severe and permanent damage to the brain”, the club said in a statement posted on their Twitter account.
“Our thoughts are with him and his family at this very difficult time”
The chief executive of Ajax Edwin van der Sar expressed regret at the sad incident.
“This is without a doubt the worst news that we have received. It is quite sad, our thoughts and prayers are with his family.”
“There are no words that can truly describe how we feel; this is a massive blow for everyone at the club even though we were hoping for something better.”
“This is a difficult time and a lot of people have shown their support and we do appreciate it.”
“Abdelhak is a great player and we don’t know how great he could have been.”
